INTRODUCTION
FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES
Functions.
To estimate the damages caused by earthquake to highway system.
To provide cost and risk information for the future strategies planning.
To enable engineers to consider effects of EQ to highway system.
Objectives
To develop program, apply and disseminate and to provide technically sound methodology.
CHARACTERISTICS OF SYSTEM EFFECTED BY EQ
The highway configuration.
Location, redundancies and traffic capacity and volume of the highway between origin -destination.
Components and their location within the highway system.
METHODOLOGY DESCRIPTION

SRA method requires the knowledge of geo-seismic and engineering like structural and transportation engg. In this method sets of input parameters and uncertainty parameters are used, which are differ from one earthquake to another.
It has two main steps:
GIS data base,
SRA method.
GIS DATABASE MODEL
It has four major modules, which contain inputs data like seismic hazards, component vulnerability and economic damages of highway system.
Four modules are;
System module.
Hazard module.
Loss module.
Component module.
SYSTEM MODULE
Traffic data.
Origin-destination zones.
Trip tables.
Network analysis.
HAZARD MODULE
Soil condition.
Topography .
Types of hazards.
Uncertainty.
LOSS MODULE
Vehicle types and its occupancy times.
Effect of the increase in the travel time.
Cost of each unit.
COMPONENT MODULE
Structural.
Repair cost.
Loss.
Uncertainty.
SRA METHODOLOGY

Seismic Risk Analysis (SRA) has four steps
Initialization of analysis.
System analysis for scenario earthquake and simulation.
Incrementation of the simulation and scenario earthquake.
Aggregate system and analysis results.
SRA METHODOLOGY
RECENT DEVEOPMENTS
REDARS:-Risk due to earthquake Damages to Roadway system.
Scenario earthquake: REDARS is used in this method. Frankel et al (1996) method under USGS is developed for this purpose.
Seismic hazards:By Youd and Tokimatsuand method seed (1987).
Network analysis: Equilibrium methods and Associative Memory network analysis
Components models: Elastic-demand method & Dutta and Mander method.
DEMONSTRATION APPLICATION

This methodology was used in as demonstration application in highway system in Shelby County in Tennessee, this highway system surrounds the city of Memphis and some of the models for different aspects are prepared for the future uses.
HIGHWAY SYSTEM 7 DAYS POST EQ

HIGHWAY SYSTEM 60 DAYS POST EQ

HIGHWAY SYSTEM POST EQ

BRIDGES DAMAGES MODEL

INCREASE IN TRAVEL TIME

CONCLUSION
This methodology help us to assess the damages of earthquake to the highway system, hence to know the performance of the highway system post earthquake and to modify the highway system accordingly to increase its efficiency. As an engineer we should consider this aspect in our designing and planning of highway system.
