Rijke tube is an instrument which shows thermo acoustics phenomena: Rijke tube is simply a cylindrical tube with lot ends open and heat source placed in it. Thermo acoustics refers is the creation of sound in a device due to the transfer of energy from a thermal source to acoustic waves set up in the device.
The Rijke tube service an a convenient prototypical system for the study of thermo acoustics phenomena. The rounding of the tube is a result of stationary acoustic wave being setup in the tube. It is also used to conduct experiments to decide the configurations for which of acoustic energy in the pulse combustors and coal bed combustors can be maximized. The intense standing acoustic oscillations generated inside the tube helps to improve the efficiency of the pulse combustors and hence the emission of CO and CXHY can be reduced some extends. But in coal bed combustors the intense acoustic energy helps to increase the effective size of fine ash particles by increasing the collision between them and they can filter easily from exhaust, hence reduce pollution.
