RFID systems have been sued in numerous applications like asset tracking, toll collection and libraries. The following seminar presents our on going research for the Auburn University Detection and Food Safety (AUDFS) project to use RFID technology combined with sensors for detection of pathogens in food. AUDFS aims to integrate the breakthrough in the detection of food borne illnesses with advances in wireless and biosensor technologies. The goal of the research is a system that can keep track of food products from initial production throughout the supply chain thus significantly reducing the mortality rate and lost productivity due to food borne bacteria and pathogens. RFID systems are wireless systems in which a remote tag in the field communicates with a reader interfaced to a host computer system. The paper discusses RFID system to be used for detection of pathogens in food. The design of the tag circuit is a major component of the research effort. For proof of concept, the tag circuit will be initially designed with reduced functionality such as detection of just temperature to control the operation of the tag. Further work will focus on incorporating biosensors that will use sensitive chemical coatings to detect harmful bacteria and other toxins, relaying the sensory information to the reader and miniaturizing the tag.

RFID is an area of automatic
identification that has quietly been gaining momentum in recent years
and is now being seen as a radical means of enhancing data handling
processes, complimentary in many ways to other data capture
technologies such as barcoding. The object of any RFID system is to
carry data in suitable transponders, generally known as tags, and to
retrieve data, by machine-readable means, at a suitable time and place.
Data within a tag may provide identification for an item in
manufacture, goods in transit, a location, the identity of a vehicle,
an animal or individual. RFID technology yields larger memory
capacities, wider reading ranges, and faster processing.
An RFID system has the following components:
1. RFID DEVICE (tag or transponder) that contains data about an item.
2. RF TRANSCEIVER that generates RF signals.
3. An ANTENNA used to transmit RF signals between RFID DEVICE and READER.
4. READER that receives RF transmissions from an RFID DEVICE and passes the data to a host system for processing.

An Introduction to RFID Technology
In the recent years, radio frequency identification technology has moved from obscurity into mainstream applications that help speed the handling of manufactured goods and materials. With RFID,the identification from a distance is possible. larger set of unique IDs are supported by it and
More info about the product can be included in the RFID like the mfg date, etc.
RFID principles
Active and passive are the two major kinds of RFID devoces. Active tags require a power source whereas the the passive ones doesn't require maintenance or batteries. One example of an active tag is the
transponder attached to an aircraft that identi-
fies its national origin. An active tag contains a antenna, a semiconductor chip . The tag antenna transfers the tag's ID and also captures the tag's energy.
Near field RFID:
In this, a reader passes a current through the tag and the magnetic field produced is corresponding to the information stored. It is the most straightforward for implementing the passive RFID.
Far-field RFID
The RFID tags based on far-field emissions capture Electromagnetic waves propagating from a dipole antenna attached to the reader. A smaller dipole antenna in the tag receives this energy as an alter-
nating potential difference that appears across the arms of the dipole. This is then fed to circuits that finally power the RFID tag.
