The company was established in 1892, with an investment of ₹ 265. Initially, the biscuits were made in a small house in the center of Calcutta. Later, the company was acquired by the Gupta brothers, mainly Nalin Chandra Gupta, a lawyer, and operated by VK Brothers. "In 1918, CH Holmes, an English businessman in Calcutta, was hired as a partner and The Britannia Biscuit Company Limited (BBCo), the Mumbai factory was established in 1924 and Peek Freans UK acquired a majority stake in BBCo. Great demand during World War II, which gave a boost to the company's sales, the current "Britannia Industries Limited" in 1979. In 1982, the US company Nabisco Brands, Inc. acquired the parent company of Peek Freans and became in a major foreign shareholder.
