Dr. Faustus has elements of both Christian morality and classical tragedy. On the one hand, it takes place in an explicitly Christian cosmos: God sits on top, as judge of the world, and each soul goes to hell or heaven. There are demons and angels, with demons tempting people to sin and angels urging them to remain faithful to God. The story of Faust is a tragedy in Christian terms, because it surrenders to temptation and condemns itself to hell. Faust's chief sin is his great pride and ambition, which can be contrasted with the Christian virtue of humility; Leaving these traits to dominate his life, Faust allows his soul to be claimed by Lucifer, the prince of the demons of Christian cosmology.
