The chemical pathology emphasizes the study and examination of the biochemical and molecular deviations that occur as part of the progress of the disease. The Department's objective is to improve the science and practice of chemical pathology through education, research and clinical service. He is very active in the training of medical graduates. He is also involved in the fine-tuning research behavior and the ease of laboratory services for the community.

Chemical pathologists have two important clinical functions. The first is liaison with health professionals, such as general practitioners, nurses, non-consultants and other medical consultants, to provide advice on what tests to use and how to interpret test results when investigating patients. This commonly includes a wide range of conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, high cholesterol, cancer, diabetes and hormonal imbalances. The second is to have the direct responsibility of the patients in the outpatient clinics and hospital wards. In these settings, chemical pathologists diagnose and treat a wide range of metabolic disorders such as high cholesterol, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, kidney stones, bone disease, and nutritional imbalances.

Chemical pathologists are also responsible for providing a reliable analytical service. This includes measuring markers of liver and kidney function, hormones, medications, and tumor markers in hundreds to thousands of patient samples every day. Many of these analytes are measured in automatic analyzers operated by biomedical scientists. Management, quality assurance and advice on the choice of tests and the evaluation of the importance of the results (especially with some of the rarest tests) are the responsibility of the chemical pathologist.
