Overview
Chemical pathology is the study of the chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body in relation to the disease, mainly through the analysis of body fluids such as blood or urine. In many diseases there are significant changes in the chemical composition of body fluids such as elevated blood enzymes due to their release of the heart muscles after a heart attack or an increase in blood sugar in diabetes mellitus Due to lack of insulin. The tests are designed to detect these changes qualitatively or quantitatively in comparison to the results of healthy people.
The chemical pathology includes:
O General or routine chemistry - commonly ordered blood chemistries, eg. Electrolytes, blood gases, lipids, liver and kidney function tests
O Special chemistry - elaborate techniques such as electrophoresis, and manual test methods
O Clinical endocrinology: the study of hormones and the diagnosis of endocrine disorders
O Toxicology - the study of drugs of abuse and other chemicals
O Monitoring of therapeutic drugs - measurement of levels of therapeutic medication in blood to optimize the dose
Or urinalysis - chemical analysis of urine for a wide range of diseases, along with other fluids such as CSF and effusions
O Fecal analysis - mainly for the detection of gastrointestinal disorders.
