When Google first introduced Project Loon, its Internet balloons used static algorithms to change the altitude and stay in position. Although they were smart, they were limited - Google could not do much to adapt to unexpected weather patterns, which are fairly common tens of thousands of meters in the air. However, it continues until today and is a different story. The Project Loon team has revealed that it is using artificial intelligence technology (specifically, machine learning) to alter the behavior of balloons and hold them in position for much longer. A test balloon remained in the Peruvian stratosphere for 98 days, adapting to difficult wind conditions that could have sent it drifting.
Like Wired's notes, algorithms now comb over large amounts of data and learn from it. In one case, the globe floated temporarily over the Pacific Ocean to catch winds when it determined that there would not be enough bursts to remain on the ground. There is even "reinforcement learning," which has the balloon refining its behavior even after making predictions about what will happen. Having said all this, the Peruvian vehicle made just under 20,000 adjustments to its altitude over the course of those 14 weeks, or dozens per day.
The AI-based update should not only keep the balloons in place for longer, but will help Google cut costs and expand its reach. You will not need to use as many balloons to cover an area with air access to the Internet, either you can reduce the size of the fleet or spread over a wider area.
