Battery level indicator indicates battery status only by bright LEDs. For example, six LEDs are bright means that 60% battery capacity remains. This article explains how to design the battery level indicator. You can use this circuit to check the car battery or the inverter. So by using this circuit, we can increase the battery life.
This circuit is designed based on lm3914 IC (integrated chip). This IC is LED Spot / Bar Display Driver.
Battery level indicator Circuit principle:
The heart of this battery level indicator circuit is LM3914 IC. This IC takes the analog input voltage and conducts 10 LEDs linearly according to the analog input voltage. In this circuit there is no need for resistors in series with led because the current is regulated by the IC.
Battery Charge Indicator Circuit Design:
In this circuit LED (D1-D10) shows the capacity of the battery in point mode or display mode. This mode is selected by external switch sw1 which is connected to the 9th IC pin. 6thand 7th IC pins are connected to ground through a resistor. This resistor controls the brightness of the LEDs. Here the resistor R3 and the POT RV1 form a potential divider circuit. Here the vessel RV1 is used for calibration. There is no need for any external power supply to this circuit.
The circuit is designed to control 10V at 15V DC. The circuit will work even if the battery voltage is 3V. The operating voltage of this IC is 3v at 25v DC. Lm3914 conducts led's, LCDs and vacuum fluorescents. The IC contains adjustable reference and accurate 10-step divider. This IC can also act as a sequencer.
Lm3914 Features:
• Internal voltage reference from 1.2 to 12v DC.
• Programmable output current from 2mA to 30mA.
• The outputs of the LED controller are regulated by the current.
• There is no multiplexing interaction between outputs.
• Supports a wide range of temperatures from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius.
• For bar graph display - connect the 9th IC pin to the supply
• For dot display - leave the 9th IC pin
