There are several techniques available for the repair and rehabilitation of concrete structures for faults and defects in concrete. These techniques and materials are described for concrete repair.
Concrete is the most widely used and versatile construction material that has several advantages over steel and other building materials. However very often one comes through with some defects in concrete. Defects can manifest as cracks, concrete shedding, reinforcement exposures, excessive deflections or other signs of distress.
In many cases, corrosion of the reinforcement can trigger cracking and peeling of the concrete, along with deterioration of the strength of the structure. Such situations require repairs of the affected areas and sometimes for the replacement of the entire structure.
The need for structural repairs may arise from any of the following:
• Defective design of the structure
• Incorrect execution and poor execution
• Extreme weather and environmental conditions
• High degree of chemical attack
• Aging of the structure
Techniques of Repair and Rehabilitation of Concrete Structures
The technique to be adopted for the repair or restoration of the structure depends on the cause, extent and nature of the damage, the function and importance of the structure, the availability of materials and adequate facilities to carry out the repair and knowledge Deep long-term structure, Long-term behavior of materials used for repair work.
Depending on the requirement, the repair technique may be superficial (cosmetic) in nature or, in some cases, may involve the replacement of part or all of the structure.
Repair techniques can be classified into three main groups:
1. Injection into cracks, voids or honeycombs.
2. Surface treatment
3. Removal and replacement of defective or damaged material / area.
A variety of new materials have been developed for the repair and restoration of damaged structures following any of the above methods.
