Using this circuit, you can change the fan speed of your sofa or bed. The TSOP1738 infrared receiver module is used to receive infrared signal transmitted by remote control.

The circuit is powered by 9V regulated. Transformer X1 shifts the AC network to deliver a secondary output of 12V-0-12V. The output of the transformer is rectified by a full-wave rectifier comprising diodes D1 and D2, filtered by the capacitor C9 and regulated by the regulator 7809 to provide a regulated output of 9V.

Any button on the remote control can be used to control the fan speed. The pulses of the IR receiver module are applied as a trip signal to the timer NE555 (IC1) via the LED1 and the resistor R4. IC1 is wired as a monostable multivibrator to delay the clock given to the decade of the counter-cum-driver IC CD4017 (IC2).

Of the ten outputs of decay counter IC2 (Q0 to Q9), only five (Q0 to Q4) are used to control the fan. The Q5 output is not used, while the Q6 output is used to reset the counter. Another timer NE555 (IC3) is also wired as a monostable multivibrator. The combination of one of the resistors R5 to R9 and the capacitor C5 controls the pulse width. The IC output CD4017 (IC2) is applied to the resistors R5 to R9. If Q0 is high capacitor C5 is charged through resistor R5, if Q1 is high capacitor C5 is charged through resistor R6, and so on.

The MCT2E optocoupler (IC5) is wired as a zero crossing detector that provides tripping pulses to the monostable multivibrator IC3 during zero crossing. The MOC3021 (IC4) opto-isolator operates the BT136 triac. The combination of resistance R13 (47 ohms) and capacitor C7 (0.01 μF) is used as a damping network for triac1 (BT136). As the pulse width decreases, the trip angle of the triac increases and the fan speed also increases. Thus, the fan speed increases when you press any button on the remote control.

Mount the circuit on a general purpose PCB and place it in a small case so that the infrared sensor can easily receive the signal from the remote transmitter.
