The building was founded when it was filled and within two years after construction was installed up to 800 mm and out of lead by 850 mm. Initially, balancers weighing 40,000 bricks were placed on the floor and on the first floor, and a wide grout was made. The soil was then removed from below the top of the foundation by insertion of perforated pipes and pumping water under pressure. This causes the soil to dissolve under water pressure. The soil was also collected manually. Theremoval of the earth and counter action balancing the weight gradually straightened the building until it reached verticality.
A four-storey residential building was built in 1990-92 at 60, Belgachia Road, Calcutta, about half a kilometer east of Balgachia Station, for the accommodation of Calcutta metro railway staff. It was a small building that covered a floor area of 6.8m x 16.2m with two floors on each floor. Construction finished in July 1992. Shortly after, the building began to settle. In November 1992 a vertical settlement of 1 50 mm with an adifferential settlement of 100 mm was observed. The monitoring of the settlement subsequently showed an increasing inclination of the building. In March 1993, the total settling of 450 mm was measured with a 410 mm differential. The emergency cement grout was then made / the base to stop the settlement. But this was unsuccessful. The building continued to settle differently. In March 1994, the total settlement increased to 800 mm and the building left lead by 850 mm. This resulted in a severe slope of the building and was declared unfit for occupancy.
