A reconfigurable antenna is an antenna capable of dynamically modifying its frequency and radiation properties in a controlled and reversible manner. In order to provide a dynamic response, the reconfigurable antennas integrate an internal mechanism (such as RF switches, varactors, mechanical actuators or tunable materials) that allow the intentional redistribution of RF currents on the antenna surface and produce reversible modifications over his properties. Reconfigurable antennas differ from intelligent antennas because the reconfiguration mechanism is located inside the antenna rather than in an external beam forming network. The reconfigurability of reconfigurable antennas is used to maximize antenna performance in a changing scenario or to meet changing operational requirements.
The advance in wireless communications requires the integration of multiple radios on a single platform to maximize connectivity. In this work the design process of reconfigurable antennas is discussed. Reconfigurable antennas are proposed to cover different wireless services operating over a wide range of frequencies. They show a significant promise in addressing the new system requirements. They exhibit the ability to modify their geometries and behavior to adapt to changes in the surrounding conditions. Reconfigurable antennas can offer the same performance as a multi-antenna system. They use dynamically variable and adaptable single antenna geometry without increasing the real estate needed to accommodate multiple antennas.
Optimizing the design and operation of the reconfigurable antenna by removing unnecessary redundant switches to alleviate polarization problems and improve system performance is discussed. Here the control of antenna reconfiguration is introduced by software, using programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) or microcontrollers. We present the use of Neural Networks and their integration with graph models in programmable platforms and its effect on the operation of reconfigurable antennas. Finally, the applications of reconfigurable antennas for cognitive radio, MIMO channels (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and space applications stand out.
