Reliable sources of energy remain a global theme of geopolitical anxiety, but a successful British trial that turns rainwater into the ultimate renewable resource could alter the entire international landscape.
Throughout 2014, a family farm in Cheshire was the test site for the potential solution to the global energy problem. The system uses a unique hydrogen boiler, installed by a company based in Bristol, to convert rainwater into energy.
Spring Bank Farm near Sandbach in Cheshire uses the rainwater boiler to provide energy to run the house, farm, a small industrial unit on site which includes a micro-brewery and a bed and breakfast guest house.
The test is a joint exercise between Clean Power Solutions and Giacomini, the Italian inventors of the world's first hydrogen burner.
This heralds a potential dismantling of the way we currently produce and store renewable energy and is the first indication of a possible break in the dominance of the six major energy producers today over industrial, commercial and domestic users.
The system brings together renewable energy through a network of 48kW photovoltaic solar panels and a 20kW wind turbine, which is then converted to an alternating current to meet the energy demands of the site. The excess energy is then stored in a synthetic network of 250ah deep cycle batteries that has many purposes, one of them to power the hydrogen electrolyzer.
The hydrogen electrolyzer collects the rainwater and purifies it by extracting the oxygen. This creates 2.2 kg of hydrogen a day that is stored in the hydrogen tank, ready for use in the Giacomini burner that converts hydrogen into thermal energy. The system not only has zero operating costs, but is also emissions-free since the boiler uses a catalytic reaction to convert hydrogen into thermal energy. Its only bi-product is oxygen.
