Introduction
Indian Railways is one of the largest Rail networks in the world today.
Major bottleneck in the railway services is the “delay of trains”.
The time tabling or scheduling of the trains, as and when they are added is also a humongous task, if done manually and if appropriate use of the Railway Track Network is targeted.
We propose to build a solution to this problem as well by providing a GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE for booking of tickets.
Objective
We propose to provide solutions for improving the Railway services by the application of efficient algorithms, to provide enhanced services at the client interface.
At the client’s end, a huge number of services can be added for improving travel experience. Some of them being –
Connecting trains – employing more than 1 train to connect areas remote to each other.
Region to Region travel in place of point to point.
Travel by arrival date and time, rather than departure.
Assured berth allocation to passengers through a selection over GUI rather than arbitrary assignments by the reservation system.
Problem Definition
We need to prepare a graphical user interface using advanced java version which is based on the “java.swing” class. The project should be designed such that the user can book the tickets for railway journey with ease having an exact idea of the seat required or as per choice. After the completion of the project, the resultant output must provide a GUI window for the seat reserved.

System Requirement Specifications (SRS)
The software addresses following guidelines as the system requirement specification (SRS):
Functionality: The software provides a GUI for booking railway tickets.
External interfaces: The user works entirely of the graphical user interface, where a user can book tickets as one can allot seats on a graphical window.
Performance: The application is speedy & doesn’t requires much resources.
Design Constraints: User interface is only in English i.e. no other language option is available. User can login only with his assigned username and password i.e. no guest facility is available.

Hardware Requirement Specifications
Operating System : Windows XP SP2 or higher.
Processor : Intel Pentium P4, x32 or higher.
RAM : Minimum 512 MB.
Graphics Memory : Minimum 64 MB.
Peripherals : Pointing device, Keyboard, Network Devices.

Future Scope & Future Enhancements
This project can be used, and hence can replace the existing booking system. The project, implemented can reduce human effort and complexities in ticket booking, thus less time consumption for same process.
The project is itself a new concept for the market. It is completely based on an environment or interface that is user friendly. Thus, this project can prove vital for the Indian Railways and surely can serve a lot.
Conclusion
The project can be viewed as a comprehensive one for those involved with Information Technology. It engrosses most of the aspects of IT Systems – both theoretical and system oriented.
It involves providing a software oriented solution to some User Requirements, after formulation of the problem. designing appropriate schemas. Also, the concept of Networks and systems comes into play with the performance considerations of the solution provided at both the administrative and the user end.

Attractive and innovative interface.
Can overcome present Railway booking system.

There are a few demerits as well:
Requires a particular platform (JRE 6).
Requires a speedy processor & sufficient memory.
