A mall is a modern term, mainly North American, for a form of commercial enclosure or shopping center, in which one or more buildings form a complex of shops representing merchants with interconnected aisles that allow customers to walk from one unit to another . A shopping arcade is a specific type of shopping area that is generally distinguished in English for shopping malls because the connecting walkways are not owned by a single owner and are outdoors. Shopping centers in 2017 accounted for 8% of retail space in the United States.
Many of the first shopping malls such as the Burlington Arcade in London, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan and numerous arcades in Paris are famous and still traded. However, many smaller arcades have been demolished, replaced by large centers or "malls", often accessible by vehicle. Technical innovations such as electric lighting and escalators were introduced since the late 19th century.
Since the end of the 20th century, places of entertainment such as cinemas and restaurants began to be added. As a single constructed structure, the first shopping centers were often architecturally important constructions, allowing richer customers to buy goods in protected areas of the climate.
