The motivation for pulsed laser polishing is to reduce the roughness of the surface of the pieces whose surface texture can approach the size of the feature. Being able to predict the magnitude of the polishing content and frequency (wavelength) of the surface will help in the design of optimal processing parameters with minimal experiments. The laser pulses are used to create shallow melting pools with a controlled size (eg, depth) and duration to allow the surface tension forces to "pull down" roughness with a small radius of curvature. There is no ablation in the modeled process. The depth and duration of the melt are predicted with an asymmetric, transient two dimensional heat transfer model, with material properties dependent on temperature. The surface of the molten group is analytically modeled as standing capillary wave oscillations with damping resulting from the forces of surface tension and viscosity. Above a critical spatial frequency, fcr, a significant reduction in the amplitude of the spatial Fourier components is expected. The work described in this paper extends the concept of critical frequency to a physics-based prediction methodology to predict the spatial frequency content and roughness of the surface after polishing, given the characteristics of the original surface, the properties of the material and the parameters of the laser. The proposed prediction methodology was validated using line polishing data for 316L stainless steel and area polishing results for pure nickel, Ti6Al4V and Al-6061-T6. The predicted average surface roughness was within 12% of the values measured on the polished surfaces.
