The pulse oximeter is designed using infrared and visible (red) light detection of light passing through a patient's finger from an emitter. The absorption will indicate when the blood is moving through the finger and how much of this is rich in oxygen. The output of this analog circuit will be fed into an Atmel ATmega644 microcontroller, which will calculate the pulse and oxygen level of these numbers. The microcontroller will output an NTSC video signal to a black and white television so that patient signals can be monitored.
Pulse oximeters are used throughout the world as a non-intrusive way to monitor the patient's pulse and oxygen saturation in blood instantly. The purpose of this design is to examine the possibility of using a simple microcontroller to measure the pulse and saturation of blood and oxygen in real time, as well as the level of difficulty and learning curve associated with assigning such a task as a project High level design. The circuit consists of a microcontroller PIC18F452, a network of transistors, a photoplethys-mogram (PPG) amplifier, pulse oximeter probe, digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and LCD display to show the results. The software is written in C ++ for the microprocessor, which supports a limited C syntax. The project requires several engineering skills such as signal processing, programming, circuits and microprocessors. Overall, the project is a good introduction to medical instrumentation and capstone design for biomedical and electrical engineers.
