Hydro-biology is the science of the processes of life and life in water. Much of modern hydro-biology can be viewed as a subdiscipline of ecology, but the sphere of hydro-biology includes taxonomy, economic biology, industrial biology, morphology, physiology, etc. The only distinctive feature is that all refer To aquatic organisms. Much work is closely related to limnology and can be divided into ecology of the latic system (flowing waters) and ecology of the lentic system (calm waters).

One of the significant areas of current research is eutrophication. Particular attention is paid to biotic interactions in the plankton set including the microbial loop, the mechanism of influencing water blooms, phosphorus loading and lake rotation. Another topic of research is the acidification of mountain lakes. Long-term studies are conducted on changes in the ionic composition of water from rivers, lakes and reservoirs in relation to acid rain and fertilization. One of the objectives of current research is to elucidate the basic environmental functions of the ecosystem in reservoirs, which are important for water quality management and water supply.

Much of the early work of hydrobiologists focused on the biological processes used in wastewater treatment and water purification, especially on slow sand filters. Another historically important work sought to provide biotic indexes to classify waters according to the biotic communities they supported. This work continues to this day in Europe in the development of classification tools for assessing water bodies for the EU Water Framework Directive.

The Brno hydrobiology department focuses on the ecology of river waters, including the smaller flood plain waters. Students focus on research on natural and anthropogenic environmental influences on populations and on changes in species and trophic structure of communities, their distribution, density and reproduction. The main research program deals with the biology and ecology of water invertebrate populations (species traits, life cycle, survival strategies). The control objects for research are populations of species of the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera, and in recent years Cladocera, Copepoda to Ostracoda. Another long-term program is the study of environmental parameters (river flow patterns, river bed geomorphology, sediments, ecosystem types and human influences such as the regulation of water flows, engineering works and their Operations, pollution, acidification, etc.) and communities of aquatic organisms. In recent years we have added the study of trophic relationships including the construction of models of trophic networks and energy flows. The model subjects are algae and sludge and background invertebrates (micro, medium and macrozoobentos) that are within the required parameters. The study of biodiversity is an integral part of the research. The research is aimed at understanding the importance of environmental changes in the areas under study, the use of these observations to assess the condition of the river ecosystem and the conservation and managed use of watercourses; Revitalization projects; And for the ecologically sustainable management of natural ecosystems. Secondary substances and energy inputs in the ecosystem are evaluated with the aim of limiting or strengthening ecological relationships in the system as closely as possible to the optimum degree. Observations of biodiversity research include water invertebrate checklists in major and minor habitats, accompanied by basic biological and ecological descriptions of species.
