A hydraulic press is a device (see machine press) that uses a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive force. It uses the hydraulic equivalent of a mechanical lever, and was also known as the Bramah press after the inventor, Joseph Bramah of England. He invented and published a patent in this press in 1795. As Bramah (who is also known for his toilet development) installed toilets, he studied the existing literature on the movement of fluids and put this knowledge into the development of the press.

Beginning

The hydraulic press depends on the Pascal principle: the pressure along a closed system is constant. One part of the system is a piston which acts as a pump, with a modest mechanical force acting on a small cross section; The other part is a piston with a larger area which generates a correspondingly large mechanical force. Only a small diameter tube (which withstands pressure more easily) is needed if the pump is separated from the pressure cylinder.

Pascal's law: The pressure on a confined fluid is transmitted without undercut and acts with equal force in equal areas and at 90 degrees from the wall of the container.

A fluid, such as oil, moves when one of the two pistons is pushed in. Since the fluid is incompressible, the volume that the small piston moves is equal to the volume displaced by the large piston. This causes a difference in the displacement length, which is proportional to the area ratio of the piston heads, given that volume = area x length. Therefore, the small piston must be moved a great distance to get the big piston to move significantly. The distance that the large piston will move is the distance the small piston moves divided by the ratio of the areas of the piston heads. Thus energy is conserved, in the form of work in this case, and the law of conservation of energy is satisfied. The work is applied force over a distance, and since the force is increased in the larger piston, the distance that the force is applied on must be decreased. The basic idea of Bramah is also exploited in hydroforming.
