Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aromatic compounds, fixatives and solvents, which are used to give the human body, animals, food, objects and living spaces a pleasant aroma. Ancient texts and archaeological excavations show the use of perfumes in some of the early human civilizations. Modern perfumery began in the late nineteenth century with the commercial synthesis of aromatic compounds such as vanillin or coumarin, which allowed the composition of perfumes with scents that were previously unattainable only with natural aromatics.
