A North American English handbag is a medium to large handbag that is often fashioned, often used by women, to store personal items.
The term "purse" originally referred to a small purse to hold coins. In British English, it is still used to refer to a small bag of coins. A "bag" is a larger accessory containing objects beyond the coin, such as personal items. American English generally uses the terms bag and purse indistinctly. The term bag began to appear in the early 1900s. Initially, it was used more frequently to refer to male hand luggage. Women's bags became larger and more complex during this period, and the term was attached to the accessory.
The verb "to bag" derives from the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's habit of taking pieces of paper from his purse at meetings and reading aloud the comments he had written about them. The more general meaning of the verb "to treat ruthlessly" came to symbolize Thatcher's style of government. Julian Critchley, one of his greatest critics of Tory Backbench magazine, once said: "Margaret Thatcher and her bag are the same as Winston Churchill and his cigar."
