INTRODUCTION
We live in a very hi-tech world. Everything is computers megabytes and gigabytes. Send it PDF or JPEG , XML, http,PDF and XPS. We even talk a different language and use words that were non existent just a few short years ago. Yet next to every computer you will find a pen or pencil.
The first writing utensils were not really utensils but fingers on a cave man's hand in which he wrote in picturegraphs, pictures of animals and how to kill them in order to survive. This was his gift to future generations. The advent of fire was also recorded on cave walls so that other generations of cave dwellers could survive. There are those who claim that the wheel was the greatest invention and there are those who say fire was the greatest. Without a doubt, the greatest invention ever conceived was writing instruments, the pen and pencil.
Pens are synonymous with writing .The Pen and pencil play a very serious and important role in mans evolution. Without pens to write with there would be no future and there certainly would be no records, no history, no past. Without writing and writing instruments we would not know about cavemen. Without writing and something to write with (pens and pencils) ther
would be no technology and absolutely no advance in civilization.
The first crude writing instruments were twigs and reeds dipped in the blood of slain animals. This was obviously know as the "Reed Pen".
Just as the Quill pen replaced the Reed pen, the "DIP pen replaced the quill pen. The dip pen is exactly that, it had to be dippen into ink. The benefit over the Quill Pen is that it was a lot more durable. Sharpening the nib (tip) wasn't required near as much. In fact the Dip Pen is still in use today by certian artists. The Dip pen can use inks that would clog up modern day utinsels such as iron gall ink. The Dip pen is not the first on the scene. There was a copper nib (tip) pen discovered in Pompei and was from the year "79" (no I didn't leave off numbers).
In 1888 the first ball point pens were introduced. They were substandard by todays standards but it was a start.
Today in the year 2010, Pens have reached a plateau that was never expected. Beautiful and unique pens are now a status symbol. There are pens that have sold for a tremendous amount of money.
The fountain pen has an interesting history. There were several different patents issued for filling ink into one. They were the "Button Filler, Lever Filler, Click Filler, Matchstick Filler and the coin filler."
