Piezoelectric effect is the ability of certain materials to generate an electric charge in response to the applied mechanical stress. The piezoelectric crystals exhibit the piezoelectric effect. This piezoelectric effect has two properties. The first is the direct piezoelectric effect which means that the material has the ability to convert the mechanical deformation into electric charge. The second is the inverse effect, in which the applied electric potential is converted into mechanical deformation energy.
The amount of energy is not much. Piezo lighters have small elements less than 0.2 square inches. In theory, a quality element could produce up to 20 watts per square inch. .2 x 20, which is approximately 4 watts. The elements used in lighters are often low-cost and produce less current, and because the frequency is so high (current only flows for a small fraction of a second), the actual amount of energy is much lower.
