Prestressed concrete is a concrete building material that is placed under compression before supporting any applied load (ie, it is "prestressed"). A more technical definition is ("structural concrete in which internal stresses have been introduced to reduce potential tensile stresses in the concrete resulting from loads"). This compression is produced by the tensioning of high-strength "tendons" located within or adjacent to the concrete volume, and is made to improve the performance of the concrete in service. The tendons may consist of plain yarns, multi-thread yarns or threaded bars, and are most commonly made of high strength steels, carbon fiber or aramid fiber. The essence of prestressed concrete is that once the initial compression has been applied, the resulting material has the characteristics of high strength concrete when subjected to subsequent compressive forces and high strength ductile steel when subjected to tensile forces . This can result in improved structural capacity and / or serviceability compared to conventionally reinforced concrete in many situations.

Prestressed concrete is used in a wide range of civil constructions and structures where its improved concrete performance can allow long periods, reduced structural thicknesses and material savings compared to reinforced concrete. Typical applications extend through high-rise buildings, residential slabs, foundation systems, bridge and dam structures, silos and tanks, industrial paving and nuclear containment structures.

First used at the end of the 19th century, prestressed concrete has been developed to cover a wide range of technologies. Tendons (or "tensioning") of the tendons can be performed either before (pre-tensioned) or after (post-tensioning) the concrete itself. The tendons may be located within the volume of concrete (internal prestressing), or totally outside it (external prestressing). While prestressed concrete uses, by definition, tendons directly attached to the concrete, post-tensioned concrete can use attached or non-joined tendons. Finally, tensioning systems can be classified as monostructural systems, where each strand or strand of the tendon is detached individually, or multi-strand systems where all strands or wires in a tendon are simultaneously tensioned.
