The desire to combine characteristics between manual and automatic transmissions is not new. Dating back to the emergence of automakers during the 1930s, automakers like Packard and Chrysler made attempts to adopt automatic features to a manual gearbox. Known as semiautomatic, these transmissions orchestrate the clutch movements during the changes without driver intervention. A Tiptronic transmission works in an opposite style, adopting the manual characteristics of an automatic gearbox allowing the driver to select gears manually, replacing the computer that controls the normal shift and using a torque converter instead of a clutch.
