ABSTRACT
Indian power sector is facing serious problem of lean revenue collection as against energy supplied due to energy thefts and network losses. All the steps taken so far, regarding the improvement of the revenue collection did not yield satisfactory results. The traditional billing systems are inaccurate, costly, slow, and unreliable. Therefore, several attempts were made to automate the billing systems. And even wastage of power is inevitable in large industries. This is because the existing system provides no check on the consumption and therefore there is a tendency to be careless.
Energy meters, the only direct revenue interface between utilities and the consumers, have undergone several advancements in the last decade. The conventional electro-mechanical meters are being replaced with electronic meters to improve accuracy in meter reading. A scheme of Electricity billing using the “PREPAID ENERGY METER” can facilitate in improved cash flow management in energy utilities. It also reduces problem of billing consumers living in isolated area and reduces deployment of manpower for taking meter readings. Over 40 countries have implemented prepaid meters in their markets. In United Kingdom the system, has been in use for well over 70 years with about 3.5 million consumers.
The aim of this project is to design a prepaid energy meter to monitor the consumption of electricity in domestic needs. The standard method of Electricity Company billing the customer is the amount of energy used in the previous month or quarter. But by using the prepaid energy meter customer is required to make advance payment before using the electricity. If the available credit is exhausted then the supply of electricity is automatically cut off by a relay and will intimate consumer by a buzzer.
