The isolated gas transmission line (GIL) is a technology developed for the needs of the 21st century, where large metropolitan areas need an electrical supply for the public and industry. Natural energy resources are often far from metropolitan areas. The GIL, as an alternative to synthetic airlines and cables, will help address local power supply needs. The technology developed is based on more than 20 years of experience, with isolated gas systems that are in synergy with pipeline technic.
Gas-insulated transmission lines do not have these problems, since the insulating medium is gas and there is no need for physical layers of insulation, and GIL is increasingly popular as a high and medium voltage transmission medium in restricted areas. This system comprises aluminum conductors which are supported by insulators contained within sealed tubes. These can be installed on the ground, in ditches or in tunnels. The tubes are pressurized with N2 / SF6 gas to provide the main insulation. The main advantage of GIL is that a higher cable rating can be achieved than with solid insulation cables and the terminations at the cable ends are less complex and less prone to failure. FIG. Figure 1 shows a GIL system in the installation process.
