In computing, data deduplication is a specialized data compression technique for removing duplicate copies of repetitive data. Related and some synonymous terms are intelligent compression (data) and storage of a single instance (data). This technique is used to improve storage utilization and can also be applied to network data transfers to reduce the number of bytes to be sent. In the deduplication process, unique data fragments, or byte patterns, are identified and stored during an analysis process. As the analysis continues, other bits are compared to the stored copy and when a match occurs, the redundant bit is replaced with a small reference pointing to the stored fragment. Since the same byte pattern can occur tens, hundreds or even thousands of times (the frequency of coincidence depends on the size of the chunk), the amount of data to be stored or transferred can be greatly reduced.
This type of deduplication is different from that made by standard file compression tools such as LZ77 and LZ78. While these tools identify briefly repeated substrings within individual files, the intent of storage-based data deduplication is to inspect large volumes of data and identify large sections-such as whole files or large file sections-that are identical to store only One copy of the same. This copy can be further compressed using single file compression techniques. For example, a typical email system can contain 100 instances of the same 1 MB (megabyte) attachment. Each time the email platform is backed up, the 100 instances of the attachment are saved, which requires a storage space of 100 MB. With data deduplication, only one instance of the attachment is stored; The following instances are referred back to the saved copy for the deduplication ratio of approximately 100 to 1.
