Rice husk ash is used in concrete construction as a cement alternative. The rice grinding industries give the by-product of the rice husk. Due to the increasing rate of environmental pollution and the consideration of the sustainability factor, the idea of using rice husk has been made.
The reasons behind the use of rice husk as an alternative for cement in the manufacture of concrete are explained in the following sections. In order to have an adequate idea of the performance of the rice husk in the concrete, a detailed study of its properties must be carried out. Around 100 million tons of rice by-products are produced worldwide. They have a very low density of 90 to 150 kg / m3. This results in a higher dry volume value.
The rice husk itself has a very rough surface that is abrasive in nature. Therefore, they are resistant to natural degradation. This would result in inadequate disposal problems. So one way to use these by-products to make a new product is the best sustainable idea. Among all the industries to reuse this product, the cement and cement manufacturing industries are the ones that can use the rice husk in a better way.
Rice husk ash has good reactivity when used as a partial substitute for cement. These are prominent in countries where rice production is abundant. Rice husk ash is active inside the cement paste. Therefore, the use and practical application of rice husk ash for the manufacture of concrete are important.
