The development of personality is the relatively lasting pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that distinguish people from each other. The dominant view in the field of personality psychology today holds that personality emerges early and continues to change in significant ways throughout life.
It is believed that adult personality traits have a basis in childhood temperament, which means that individual differences in disposition and behavior appear early in life, possibly even before language or conscious self-representation develops. It has been found that the Five Factor Model is related to the dimensions of the child's temperament, suggesting that individual differences in the levels of the "five big" personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, kindness and awareness) are present from young ages.
