Elevators are vertical lift transport systems that effectively move people between floors of buildings. Most are powered by eclectic motors that pull the steel cables along the pulleys. The first known reference to an elevator comes from the Roman architect Vitruvius. Reported that the mathematician and inventor Archimedes built the first elevator in 236 BC. The elevators in this time period were mentioned to have been constructed of hemp rope and hand or animal powered. The prototypes of the elevators were later found in palaces of England and France.
By the mid-1800s, there were dozens of crude lifts that were designed to carry both cargo and human. These old elevators worked through hydraulic systems, the first one using a plunger under the elevator to raise or lower. To help lift the enormous weight of the elevator, a counterbalance system was implemented.
