The Area Traffic Control System (ATCS) is an Indian Highway Traffic Solution that optimizes the traffic signal, covering a set of roads for an area of a city. It is an intelligent traffic control system that uses vehicle detector data and optimizes the traffic signal configuration in an area to reduce vehicle delays and stops.
The control system operates in real time with an ability to calculate the optimum cycle time and feeds the input to the traffic signal controllers with a different set of step timings. Traffic controller time plans automatically change to reduce downtime, which in turn reduces total travel time.
Traffic controllers can be connected to the ATCS server through the leased line managed network. Therefore, traffic control over an area can be made possible from a central location. The system facilitates the storage of traffic data for individual crossings over a period of days, including traffic pattern during peak times, allowing traffic engineers to view and analyze traffic data.
The original ATCS technology was developed by the Advanced Computing Development Center (CDAC, Thiruvananthapuram), WML manufactures the same and has supplied more than 200 controllers in cities such as Pune, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. The system supplied so far is operating satisfactorily under different ambient conditions and is therefore proven.
