Home care services are growing in recent years. Contemplating the pair of patients / family, represents a solution to the medical problems of modern life. With social trends, the elderly population has been increasing in recent years. However, as life is more stressful than ever, there are more cases of chronic diseases. Transportation difficulties in large cities and shortage of hospital beds make home care an attractive solution. However, their routines can be switched by telemedicine. This article describes the implementation of a telemedicine system for the monitoring of patients by mobile telephony. The main aspect of this application is its generality, which allows the use of any patient monitor with an RS-232 interface. The system turned out to be fast and reliable. Therefore, it represents a solution applicable to telehomecare.
Telemedicine is the use of telecommunications and information technology to provide clinical medical care remotely. It has been used to overcome barriers to distance and to improve access to medical services that would often not be available in remote rural communities. It is also used to save lives in critical care and emergency situations.
Although there were distant precursors to telemedicine, it is essentially a product of information and telecommunications technologies of the twentieth century. These technologies allow communication between the patient and the medical staff with convenience and fidelity, as well as the transmission of medical data, images and health informatics from one place to another.
The first forms of telemedicine achieved with telephone and radio have been complemented by video telephony, advanced diagnostic methods supported by distributed client / server applications and telemedical devices to support home care.
