In recent years, due to the attractive features of cloud computing, a lot of data has been stored in the cloud. Although cloud-based services offer many advantages, the privacy and security of sensitive data is a major concern. To mitigate concerns, it is desirable to outsource confidential data in encrypted form. Encrypted storage protects data against illegal access, but complicates some basic but important features, such as data search. To achieve the search on encrypted data without compromising privacy, a considerable amount of encryption schemes have been proposed in the literature that can be searched. However, almost all of them handle the exact match of queries, but not coincidence of similarities, a crucial requirement for real-world applications. Although some sophisticated multi-part secure computing-based cryptography techniques are available for similarity testing, they are computationally intensive and do not scale to large data sources. In this work, we propose an efficient scheme for the similarity search on cipher data. To do this, we use a state-of-the-art algorithm for fast search of nearby neighbors in high-dimensional spaces called hashing sensitive to the locality. To ensure the confidentiality of sensitive data, we provide a rigorous safety definition and demonstrate the safety of the proposed scheme under the definition provided. In addition, we provide an actual application of the proposed scheme and verify the theoretical results with empirical observations in a real data set.
