The use of four wheels, two wheeled vehicles, etc. Is increasing day by day. As a result, the amount of waste tires also increases. Waste tires in India are classified as solid or hazardous waste. It is estimated that about 60 per cent of waste tires are distributed in unknown ways in both urban and rural areas. This leads to various environmental problems including air pollution associated with open burning of tires (particulates, odours, visual impacts and other harmful pollutants such as poly-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dioxins, furans and nitrogen oxides) and aesthetic contamination. Therefore, it is necessary to use wastes effectively with technical development in each field. Waste tires can be used as an appropriately sized aggregate in the various bituminous mixtures if cut in aggregate form and can be referred to as rubber aggregate. This not only minimizes the pollution produced due to waste tires, but also minimizes the use of conventional aggregate which is available in exhaustible amount.

Waste tires are being generated and accumulated in large volumes that cause an increasing threat to the environment. To eliminate the negative effect of these depositions and in terms of sustainable development there is a great interest in the recycling of these solid non-hazardous waste. The potential for the use of rubber from worn tires in many civil engineering works has been studied for more than 30 years. Applications where tires can be used and where the addition of tire rubber has proven to be effective in protecting the environment and conserving natural resources include the production of cement mixes, road construction and geotechnical works. The recycling of tires in the applications mentioned above represents a means of disposal suitable for environmental and economic reasons.

Today the disposal of the different wastes produced from different industries is a big problem. These materials represent environmental pollution in the locality because many of them are not biodegradable. Traditionally soil, aggregate of stone, sand, bitumen, cement, etc. Are used for road construction. The natural material is of an exhaustible nature, its quantity is gradually decreasing. Also, the cost of extracting good quality of natural material is increasing. Concerned about this, scientists are looking for alternative materials for road construction, so pollution and disposal problems can be partially reduced. Taking into account the need for a massive use of these solid wastes in India, it was considered desirable to test these materials and develop specifications for improving the use of waste tires in road construction, where higher economic performance is possible. The possible use of these materials should be developed for the construction of low volume roads in different parts of our country. The necessary specifications should be formulated and an attempt is made to maximize the use of solid waste in different layers of the pavement.
