In the future, airplanes will offer a variety of passenger entertainment and communications equipment. As people are increasingly using their own communications equipment such as mobile phones and laptops with an Internet connection, either through a network interface card or dial-up modems, business travelers Will soon require wireless access to communication services. Specifically, it focuses on wireless services such as UMTS and W-LAN in aircraft cabins that connect the passenger via satellite to the terrestrial infrastructure. Current trends are towards high-speed data communication services, particularly Internet applications. In an aeronautical scenario, global coverage is essential to provide continuous service. Therefore, satellite communication became indispensable, and coupled with the ever increasing requirements of data speed applications, aeronautical satellite communication is encountered with an expensive market.
In recent years, wireless networks have become more common than cable networks. One field of application in which wireless networks are of much greater practical use is aviation, as airplanes are scattered all over the world. In this article we discuss recent and future developments in wireless aircraft networks (AWNs). In commercial aviation, the main objectives are to provide Internet connectivity to passengers. We discussed some research that has allowed this technology as well as some current and future services, such as Connexion by Boeing and On Air, to meet this demand. The military uses wireless networks to improve tactical awareness of the situation of warplanes. It is important to note that the paradigm of the AWN is different in military applications, where the intention is not to connect to the public Internet. The military domain is also where the development of AWNs is the most mature in terms of standardization and ubiquity. We discussed two of the most relevant military AWN standards, Link-16 and JTRS.
