General Organisational Setup & work

HARDWARE SPECIFICATION
Hardware Environment
Server:
An IBM Mainframe server with about 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Disk, with support for backup devices and connected to a network along with several client systems.
Client:
Personal Computers with Pentium III 600 MHz processors or above with 128 MB RAM, 20 GB Hard disk and should be connected to the IBM Mainframe Server via robust network with Personal Communication.
Network:
A Local Area Network that connects both the server and the client with high-speed data transfer networking cables and hubs.
CIS sub network LAN system consisting of the above components. LAN is UTC (Unshielded Twisted Cable) with no client being physically more than 80 meters away from the server to HUB.
A 16 port HUB with 3 Meters of the server at 10 MBPS for the Ethernet. Ethernet 10 MBPS for the connectivity between the server and all clients. The network also contains

After implementation, the system integrates various electronic devices other than the actual computers like ATM, Laser Cards; WAP enabled electronic devices etc. and communicate with the server, which may be of distributed type. This help in reducing data storage at a single place, which avoids loss of data in case of a failure or non-availability of resources.

IBM Mainframe (OS 390) – The OS for Banking System:
OS 390 is one of the most popular operating systems on IBM Mainframe. It is popular because it is available for a wide variety of computer platforms and because it is a multi-user, multitasking environment. This means that several people can use a Unix computer simultaneously-and each person can run several programs at once. This makes OS 390 a very powerful system. Unix was developed in 1969 at Bell Labs. Since its creation, Unix has seen countless updates, revisions and spin offs.
There are flavors of IBM Mainframe systems with names like z-series servers. These systems work in very similar ways, but it is important to know what version you’re using when you have a question or are looking for a book on mainframe. Mainframe is an operating system for multi-tasking, multi-user computing systems. Unix-based computers were “main frames”, powerful computers for heavy computing tasks, which were expensive and hence shared by many users who share the costs.
Today, desktop PCs are more powerful than the mainframes of even a few years ago, so the distinction between the two categories has become less relevant. However, Unix remains a useful operating system for programming, research computing and networked communications. Because Unix predates a most modern, graphical PC operating systems, it may seem at first to be overlay cryptic and difficult to learn. However, Unix users often grow to enjoy the benefits of both a concise command-line operating system and graphical user interface extensions (X-Windows). And, the networking standards and networking software tools developed under Unix remain as standards used by today’s networked PC environments. Unix hosts remain the workhorses of the Internet.
