Free-flow landfills are simpler and safer than closed ones, but the low specific flow of their traditional forms requires large spills in the depths of the beds and, therefore, large losses of storage. A newly evolved form of the free-flow landfill (the "piano key dump") has the potential to increase specific flow as high as four times to lower discharges. It could substantially increase, at low cost, the safety and storage and / or flood control efficiency of many existing and new dams. Therefore, it is very advantageous to increase the specific flow as much as possible. Some dozens of existing landfills have been designed as vertical walls on a flat bottom, with a trapezoidal labyrinth arrangement that is much longer than the length of the landfill (often four times). They usually double the specific flow of an Ogee landfill. Piano-Key Weir derives its name from its plan shape so that it looks like a piano-key. It is configured as polygonal walls, so that it provides a much longer crest length than conventional ogee landfills.
Landfills play an important role in ensuring flood safety of prey. Insufficient landfill capacity has been responsible for one-third of all dam failures. Landfills represent a substantial part of the project's total costs and play an important role in ensuring safety. An innovative and effective way to increase spill capacity is to use a Labyrinth dump. The concept of the Maze Dam is to vary the shape of the crest plan to increase the effective length of the crest.
A new concept of a Labyrinth weir has been proposed with a new form like black and white piano keys when seen in the plan, this new concept was called the Weir piano key. This innovative design solves most of the problem posed by the original labyrinth weir, and is also more efficient.
