In electronics, a logic gate is an idealized or physical device that implements a Boolean function; that is, it performs a logical operation on one or more binary inputs and produces a single binary output. Depending on the context, the term may refer to an ideal logical gate, which has for example zero rise time and unlimited deployment, or may refer to a non-ideal physical device.

Logic gates are implemented mainly using diodes or transistors that act as electronic switches, but can also be built using vacuum tubes, electromagnetic relays (relay logic), fluid logic, pneumatic logic, optics, molecules or even mechanical elements. With the amplification, the logic gates can be connected in cascade in the same way that the Boolean functions can be composed, allowing the construction of a physical model of all the Boolean logic and, therefore, all the algorithms and the mathematics that are can describe with Boolean logic.

The logic circuits include devices such as multiplexers, registers, arithmetic logic units (ALU) and computer memory, through complete microprocessors, which can contain more than 100 million doors. In modern practice, most doors are made of field effect transistors (FETs), particularly metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs).

Composite logic gates AND-O-Invert (AOI) and OR-AND-Invert (OAI) are often used in circuit design because their construction using MOSFET is simpler and more efficient than the sum of the individual gates. In reversible logic, Toffoli doors are used.
