When used as an AC signal amplifier, the transistor base biazing voltage is applied in such a way that it always works in its "active" field, which is the linear part of the output characteristics. However, both NPN and PNP type bipolar transistors can be operated as a solid state switch of type "on / off" by separating it separately for the transistor base terminal in a signal amplifier. Solid State Switch is one of the main applications for the use of transistors to switch a DC output "current" or "off". Some output devices, such as LED, require only a few millimeters on the logic level DC voltage, and hence logic can be operated directly from the gate output. However, high power devices such as motors, soloenios, or lamps are often required more power than supplied by common logic gate, hence the transistor switch is used. If the circuit uses bipolar transistors in the form of switches, then the transistor's bijing, either NPN or PNP, is arranged to operate transistors on both sides of the "I-V" attributes we have seen before.
