Photonics is the physical science of the generation, detection and manipulation of light by means of emission, transmission, modulation, signal processing, switching, amplification and detection / detection. Although it covers all technical applications of light across the spectrum, most photonic applications are in the range of visible light and near infrared. The term photonics was developed as a consequence of the first emitters of practical semiconductors invented in the early sixties and the optical fibers developed in the seventies.


The word "photonic" is derived from the Greek word "photos" meaning light; It appeared in the late 1960s to describe a field of research whose purpose was to use light to perform functions that traditionally fell within the typical domain of electronics, such as telecommunications, information processing, and so on.

Photonics as a field began with the invention of the laser in 1960. Other developments followed: the laser diode in the 1970s, optical fibers for information transmission, and fiber amplifier doped with erbium. These inventions formed the basis for the telecom revolution of the late twentieth century and provided infrastructure for the Internet.

Although coined earlier, the term photonics came into widespread use in the 1980s when fiber optic data transmission was adopted by telecommunication network operators. At that time, the term was widely used in Bell Laboratories. Their use was confirmed when the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society established an archival journal called Photonics Technology Letters in the late 1980's.

During the period culminating with the dot-com accident around 2001, photonics as a field focused largely on optical telecommunications. However, photonics covers a wide range of scientific and technological applications, including laser manufacturing, biological and chemical detection, medical diagnosis and therapy, visualization technology and optical computing. Further growth of photonics is likely if current developments in silicon photonics are successful.
