Perpetual pavements
" Perpetual pavements" is a term used to describe a durable structural design, construction and maintenance for HMA pavements. If properly maintained and rehabilitated, a perpetual pavement that lasts more than 50 years can be designed and constructed without requiring major structural rehabilitation or reconstruction and requiring only a periodic surface renovation in response to limited disturbances to the top of the pavement .
The concept of perpetual pavements, or durable HMA pavements, is not new. Depth and depth HMA pavement structures have been built since the 1960s and before, and those that were well designed and well built have been very successful in providing long service life under heavy traffic (APA, 2001). Advances in grinding, recycling and HMA technology in the last decades have created HMA pavements that perform better, longer and with lower life cycle costs than previously possible.
As Michael Nunn pointed out in 1998, flexible pavements on a minimum strength are not likely to exhibit structural damage even when subjected to very high traffic flows over long periods of time. He noted that existing pavements over about 370 mm (14.5 inches) should be able to withstand an almost infinite number of axle loads without structural deterioration due to fatigue cracking or subgrade decking. A deterioration was observed in these thick and strong pavements that began on the surface of the pavement like a cracks from top to bottom or a lattice. In addition, Uhlmeyer et al. (2000) found that most of the thicker HMA decks of approximately 160 mm (6.3 inches) exhibit only top-down cracking initiated at the surface. Therefore, if cracking and formation of surface-initiated routines can be taken into account before they affect the structural integrity of the pavement, pavement life could be greatly increased.
