Mobile billing and power distribution monitoring system using GSM technology

Abstract:
This paper presents thedevelopment of GSM based energy metersystem. In present day’s consumer as well asthe electricity board are facing manyproblems in billing system and collecting therevenue. Using GSM power meters we canovercome the problems which are observedin present system like tampering, labour cost,paper cost, and bill payment. The main aimof the project is to monitor energy meter andbilling system of an electrical energyconsumed and paying the bills throughprepaid/post-paid consumption of power andit maintains records of electrical powerconsumed over time by electrical appliances
Introduction:
Every month we can see a personstanding in front of our house fromElectricity board or water Board whoseduty is to read the energy meter/watermeter and handover the bills (electric orwater) to the owner of that house . This isnothing but meter reading. According tothat reading we have to pay the bills. Themain drawback of this system is thatperson has to go area by area and he has toread the meter of every house andhandover the bills. The Electricity boardand Water authority has to give privilegesfor these people to do their duty monthly.The thing is, Government will not appointany particular persons for this duty. Thepeople working in these boards will go ona particular day and do their duty leavingall their pending works. Due to this, theirwork will be delayed and this is great lossfor government. To overcome thisdrawback we have come up with an ideaand this idea will help the government andit will save the time of the employeesworking in these boards.The present system has following drawbacks.If the consumer consumes more power, thebill will be high. Tampering, Labour cost,paper cost will be increases. For the billpayment the consumer has to go forconsumer forums only.
To overcome all these problems by usingour system:
The number of units consumed byconsumer is immediately transmitted to theadministrator (Electricity board), so noproblem of less payment. Tampering is alsoavoided by our system. Labour cost, papercost will be minimised by using of oursystem. The payment of electricity bill can bedone through recharging the SIM which ispresent in the modem, as we recharge ourmobile phones also by using internet etc.The purpose of this paper isremote monitoring and control thedomestic energy meters. This systemenables the electricity departments to readthe meter readings regularly without theperson visiting the house. This can beachieved by the microcontroller thatcontinuously monitors and records theenergy meter readings in its permanent(non-voltaic) memory location. ThisSystem also makes use of a GSM modemfor remote monitoring and control ofenergy meter.The microcontroller based systemcontinuously records the readings and thelive meter reading can be sent to theelectricity department on request. Thissystem can also be used to disconnect thepower supply to the house in case of nonpayment of electricity bills. A dedicatedGSM modem with sim card is required foreach energy meter.

Power supply:
The microcontroller andother devices get power supply from ACto Dc adapter through voltage regulator.The adapter output voltage will be 12VDC non regulated. The 7805 voltageregulators are used to convert 12 V to5VDC.
Energy meter:
An electric meter or energy meter is adevice that measures the amount of electricalenergy consumed by a residence, business, oran electrically powered deviceElectric meters are typically calibrated inbilling units, the most common one being thekilowatt hour. Periodic readings of electricmeters establish billing cycles and energyused during a cycle.Generally electronic energy metersare used and they are classified as analogueenergy meters and digital energy meters, butnow a day’s most of energy meters are ofdigital type.

The payment of electricity bill can be done through recharging the SIM which is present in the modem, as we recharge our mobile phones also by using internet etc. The purpose of this paper is remote monitoring and control the domestic energy meters. This system enables the electricity departments to read the meter readings regularly without the person visiting the house. This can be achieved by the microcontroller that continuously monitors and records the energy meter readings in its permanent (non-voltaic) memory location. This System also makes use of a GSM modem for remote monitoring and control of energy meter. The microcontroller based system continuously records the readings and the live meter reading can be sent to the electricity department on request. This system can also be used to disconnect the power supply to the house in case of non payment of electricity bills. A dedicated GSM modem with sim card is required for each energy meter. energy meters and digital energy meters, but now a day’s most of energy meters are of digital type.
