It is known that speed control in the universal motor by means of microprocessors is very complex and expensive. However, the application of speed control in the universal motor by peripheral interface controller (PIC) can be done with a simpler hardware and software program. Generally, microcontrollers are preferred because of their ability to find solutions to all kinds of control problems that could not be solved by microprocessors. Therefore, they have been developed rapidly and have been used in several fields recently. Also due to the superior capabilities of the PIC, they are preferred in universal control of engine speed. Generally, two different methods have been used in universal engine speed controls; One is the measurement of the period and the other is the measurement of the frequency. In this study, both methods were applied in the universal motor speed control. The trigger angles of the triac were changed with the feedback received from the tachogenerator that was coupled to the universal motor shaft and ensured that the universal motor speed was stable under variable load. The principle of program operation and the written text of the program were presented in this study. In addition to the results of the application, suggestions have been made on the advantages and development of the microcontroller system.
