A bus (also archaically omnibus, multibus, motorbus, bus) is a road vehicle designed to carry many passengers. Buses can have a capacity as high as 300 passengers. The most common type of bus is the single-story rigged bus, with larger loads carried by two-story articulated buses, and smaller loads carried by midibuses and minibuses; Coaches are used for long distance services. Many types of buses, such as city buses and intercity buses, charge a fee. Other types such as elementary or secondary school buses or transportation buses within a post-secondary education campus do not charge a fee. In many jurisdictions, bus drivers require a special license above and beyond a regular driver's license.
Buses can be used for regular bus transportation, regular bus transportation, school transportation, private hire or tourism; Promotional buses can be used for political campaigns and others are operated privately for a wide range of purposes, including rock and pop band tour vehicles.
In 1820 horse coaches were used, followed by steam buses in the 1830s and electric trolleybuses in 1882. The first internal combustion engine buses were used in 1895. Recently, interest has grown in hybrid electric buses , Fuel cell buses, and electric buses, as well as those powered by compressed natural gas or biodiesel. From the year 2010, the manufacture of buses is becoming more globalized, with the same designs that appear all over the world.
