Stamping (also known as crimping) is the process of placing planar sheet in the form of a coil or blank in a stamping press in which a tool and die surface forms the metal in a net shape. The embossing includes a variety of sheet metal forming manufacturing processes, such as punching using a machine press or a stamping, cutting, stamping, bending, beading and coining press. This could be a single stage operation where each stroke of the press produces the desired shape on the sheet metal part, or it could occur through a series of steps. The process is generally carried out on sheet metal, but can also be used on other materials, such as polystyrene.
