A load cell is a transducer that converts the force into a measurable electrical output. Although there are many varieties of load cells. Load cells based on strain gauges are the most commonly used type.
Through a mechanical arrangement, the force being detected deforms a strain gauge. The strain gauge measures deformation (deformation) as an electrical signal. A load cell generally consists of four extensometers in a Wheatstone bridge configuration. Load cells are also available from a voltage meter (room bridge) or two voltage meters (half bridge). The electrical signal output is typically in the order of a few millivolts and requires amplification by an instrumentation amplifier before it can be used. The output of the transducer can be scaled to calculate the force applied to the transducer.
