Homeopathy is a system of alternative medicine created in 1796 by Samuel Hahnemann, based on his doctrine of similar cures (similia similibus curentur), an assertion that a substance that causes the symptoms of a disease in healthy people would cure similar symptoms in sick people . Homeopathy is a pseudoscience - a belief that presents itself incorrectly as scientific. Homeopathic preparations are not effective for the treatment of any condition. Large-scale studies have shown that homeopathy is no more effective than placebo, indicating that the positive effects following treatment are only due to the placebo effect, normal recovery from disease, or regression to the mean.

Hahnemann believed that the underlying causes of the disease were phenomena to which he called miasmas, and that the homeopathic preparations referred to them. The preparations are manufactured using a homeopathic dilution process, wherein a chosen substance is repeatedly diluted in alcohol or distilled water, each time the container is struck against an elastic material (commonly a leather bound book). The dilution typically continues beyond the point at which no molecules of the parent substance remain. Homeopaths select homeopaths by consulting reference books known as repertoires and considering the totality of the patient's symptoms, his personal traits, his physical and psychological state and his life history.
