Passive solar buildings use solar energy for their power needs at different stations.

The rate of increase of population growth with the increase of innovations in the field of industries and technologies have together resulted in the increase of energy consumption enormously. This high consumption is a concern for sustainability. This has a negative impact on the environment and energy conservation.

Therefore, an innovation in building construction, which would be realized with existing energy, without exploiting any additional mechanical or electrical source is called as a passive solar building design concept. These buildings take advantage of the climate, where it must be built. An appropriate site analysis would judge the functioning of the building.

The concept of passive solar buildings is adopted in new buildings. But existing buildings can be adapted to behave passively. The building is called passive solar buildings because we do not use any mechanical or electrical device inside the building to carry the concept.

The main concept of passive solar buildings is that their building elements, ie windows, walls and floors are made capable of collecting solar energy and storing them. This energy is then used in the winter for heat and is used to reject the heat during the summer seasons.

Principles

The buildings of passive solar buildings are based on the following principles:

• The first principle is based on the route of the sun in different seasons. The sun in winter will be traveling on a lower route compared to the summer.
• In winter, the glass facing south will help absorb and store energy in the building.
• The location of the thermal mass in a position that allows an easy absorption of the solar energy later would help in the easy release of the same during the night.
• The direct sun can be resisted by protruding elements as shown in the figure below. These are also called control elements.
• Adequate insulation allows heat in winter and cold in summer.
